Emma and her husband, Alex, live in her family home on Mersea Island with their young son. Alex hates the seclusion and is overjoyed when a promotion at work offers the opportunity to move to the city, but Emma is sick with worry over leaving because she killed a man years ago—her former teacher, Luke—and buried him on the property. Determined to move the body, she is confronted with an empty grave instead. She confesses the sordid tale to her husband, which leads Alex to discovering shocking things about his wife… but the worst is yet to come.
I love books where all is not as it seems, and Silent Victim definitely falls into that category. Mersea Island is full of long-buried secrets waiting to be unearthed, and I was completely wrapped up in the mystery of it all.
The story is told through three points of view, set in three distinct timelines: the present (2017), the recent past (2013), and the more distant past (2002). It may sound a bit confusing, but it isn’t; this allows the reader to piece together what happened in the past, and why it’s relevant in the present-day timeline. Everything comes together beautifully, ensuring a suspenseful journey for the reader as they begin to realize what (might) be going on.
Unreliable narrations and clever misdirection were abundant throughout the novel, leading to a thrilling climax that often left me breathless in fearful anticipation and more than a little anxiety during particularly intense moments.
This is the first book I’ve read by Caroline Mitchell, and I can’t help but chastise myself for having waited so long to read one of her books. What on earth was I thinking?! I’ll absolutely be reading more from this author.
If you love reading psychological thrillers with unreliable narrators, I think you’ll thoroughly enjoy this book.
About the Book
Emma’s darkest secrets are buried in the past. But the truth can’t stay hidden for long.
Emma is a loving wife, a devoted mother…and an involuntary killer. For years she’s been hiding the dead body of the teacher who seduced her as a teen.
It’s a secret that might have stayed buried if only her life had been less perfect. A promotion for Emma’s husband, Alex, means they can finally move to a bigger home with their young son. But with a buyer lined up for their old house, Emma can’t leave without destroying every last trace of her final revenge…
Returning to the shallow grave in the garden, she finds it empty. The body is gone.
Panicked, Emma confesses to her husband. But this is only the beginning. Soon, Alex will discover things about her he’ll wish he’d learned sooner. And others he’ll long to forget.
