Pieces of Her by Karin Slaughter

What if the person you thought you knew best turns out to be someone you never knew at all . . . ?

Andrea Cooper is celebrating her birthday at a restaurant with her mother, Laura, when a gunman enters and starts shooting people. Andrea is shocked when Laura confronts the gunman and ends the conflict. Full of questions her mother refuses to answer and followed quickly by another shocking event, Andrea finds herself on the run at Laura’s urgent request. Now she’s on a quest to uncover her mother’s secrets… completely unaware of how dangerous those secrets may be.

Pieces of Her is a stunning piece of work, full of suspense and thrills. The story is told in the present (mainly from Andrea’s point of view), as well as having flashback chapters of events that happened in the past. The mystery of Laura’s past is gradually revealed with tantalizing tidbits that gave just enough information to allow the reader’s imagination to run wild.  I came up with hundreds of theories about what it all meant, only to discover I was wrong each time.

The truth about Laura, once revealed, was well worth the wait. The only question remaining, for me, was how she ended up in Belle Isle—another reveal that I found to be just as satisfying.

I did wish there was more information about a couple of characters from Laura’s past, but this was just me wanting to know more about them, rather than a need for it story-wise. (You know what I’m talking about here, readers: we always want to know more!)

I thoroughly enjoyed every minute spent reading this fantastic book. The characters were vivid, the settings were so well-described I felt as if I was there, and the mystery of Laura is one that I won’t soon forget. This book was absolutely amazing.

In preparing to write this review, I was stunned to realize this is the first time I’ve read a book written by Karin Slaughter. I don’t know how I managed to miss out on reading her books before now, but I’ll be keeping an eye out for them from now on!

If you love reading suspenseful thrillers, you need to read this book!

About the Book

The #1 internationally bestselling author returns with a new novel in the vein of her New York Times bestsellers Pretty Girls and The Good Daughter—a story even more electrifying, provocative, and suspenseful than anything she’s written before.

What if the person you thought you knew best turns out to be someone you never knew at all . . . ?

Andrea Cooper knows everything about her mother, Laura. She knows she’s spent her whole life in the small beachside town of Belle Isle; she knows she’s never wanted anything more than to live a quiet life as a pillar of the community; she knows she’s never kept a secret in her life. Because we all know our mothers, don’t we?

But all that changes when a trip to the mall explodes into violence and Andrea suddenly sees a completely different side to Laura. Because it turns out that before Laura was Laura, she was someone completely different. For nearly thirty years she’s been hiding from her previous identity, lying low in the hope that no one would ever find her. But now she’s been exposed, and nothing will ever be the same again.

The police want answers and Laura’s innocence is on the line, but she won’t speak to anyone, including her own daughter. Andrea is on a desperate journey following the breadcrumb trail of her mother’s past. And if she can’t uncover the secrets hidden there, there may be no future for either one of them…
