You might want to think twice before going to Dumpton hospital, especially when you’ll be left in the hands of some Dumpton’s most eccentric staff.

My name is James Higgins, Higgo, and this is the place where I spend my working days. I stay here mainly for the laughs and the well-being of the patients, which at least takes your mind off the poor pay — I think the volunteers earn more! I work as a hospital porter.

My Review:

The short story Champagne and Lemonade is told through the eyes of hospital porter James Higgins, also known as ‘Higgo’. Higgo works at Dumpton Hospital and, as we begin to see the hospital through his eyes, it appears to be very aptly named.  The person in charge wants employees to work longer hours for less pay and with less staff; this creates a flurry of activity in preparation of an inspection by health officials. Hilarity ensues as the staff tries their best to prevent them from seeing things they didn’t want them to see.

Hickling fills this tale with a cast of quirky characters who spend their time between tasks gossiping  with one another and enjoying the latest mishap of the day. It took a bit for me to get into the groove of the story, but that’s not unusual for me when it comes to short stories.  It was a fast, fun read.
